Summary:
The Nimsoft Cisco NBAR solution monitors an application’s network consumption via Cisco's Network Based Application Recognition (NBAR) technology. This solution leverages the powerful NBAR feature, which collects network usage metrics and provides total use by protocol and a relative ranking of top consumers of network capacity.
NBAR allows network administrators to understand which applications are using the most network bandwidth, and to set traffic prioritization based on the most important business critical applications. Conversely, less critical applications can be allocated smaller amounts of available bandwidth or blocked all together. NBAR works with quality-of-service (QoS) features to help ensure that network bandwidth is best used to fulfill the company's objectives. |
Due to the large and diverse amounts of traffic and protocols that flow across today’s networks, administrators now require a better way to ensure that business-critical traffic receives a higher priority to the network than lower priority, or less urgent traffic.
As an example, the manager of a customer service center would want to make sure that their operators are able to quickly access critical customer records within their CRM solution, which runs on an Oracle database backend. As a result, the traffic between the CRM solution and the Oracle database, which is transmitted via the Oracle SQL*NET protocol, is one of the most critical data flows to the business.
To ensure the operators get the timely access to the information they need, this data flow needs to be granted ample network bandwidth and response time. All other traffic types should be set to a lower priority, or blocked entirely, to “make room” for the Oracle traffic.
Together, Nimsoft and Cisco NBAR provide the means to classify traffic in such a manner and report on the application’s network usage.

Nimsoft NBAR Metrics Provided
A number of pre-defined NBAR tests are available in addition to user defined NBAR classifications. The pre-defined list of tests is listed below.
Availability
Whether or not this test was able to contact the Cisco router. If this test was able to contact the Cisco router, Availability is reported as 100%. Otherwise, it is reported as 0%.
Test Completed
Whether or not this test was able to collect NBAR data for all the specified protocols. If this test was able to collect NBAR data for all the specified protocols, Test Completed is reported as 100%. Otherwise, it is reported as 0%.
